The available SUVs prior to the Pilot model include Civic and CR-V. The Honda Pilot offers adequate passenger space, maximum towing capacity, and off road capability. The redesigned version of the model came with enhanced dimensions. It is available in only North American market, while Australia and Japan get its relative model, MDX.
First Generation (2002-2008)
The first generation model was released in 2002 as 2003 model vehicle. More than 100,000 models were sold during this period. It is one of the best selling SUVs in American market.
The standard engine to the 2002 Honda Pilot model include a 3.5 liter V6 version that delivers power up to 240 hp at 5400 rpm and torque of 242 lb ft at 4500 rpm. The standard engine is mated to 4-speed automatic transmission. With the V6 engine, the mid-sized crossover SUV can achieve fuel economy of 17 miles per gallon in the city premises and 22 miles per gallon on the highway roads. The mid-sized SUV has the seating capacity to accommodate up to 8-passengers.
The Honda Pilot released in this generation comes equipped with full fledged safety and comfort features. Some of the safety features include curtain side air bags, front side air bags, adjustable driver and front passenger seat, traction control and electronic stability program.
Second Generation (2009-present)
The second generation Pilot model is totally redesigned, gaining few new features and more powerful engine. The key features that attract potential customers towards the model are its visibility, build quality and passenger and cargo room. On the other hand, it has low fuel economy rates than the other competitor models in its class.
The second generation Honda Pilot is offered in four trim versions, the base model LX, EX, EX-L and high performance oriented Touring. All the models are offered in either all wheel drive or in front wheel drive. For 2009, the overall length, width and wheel base of the model has been increased. The major competitors to the model include Toyota Highlander, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-9, Chevrolet Traverse and Dodge Journey.
The only engine available to the current generation Honda Pilot model include a 3.5 liter SOHC V6 version that delivers 250 hp of power at 5700 rpm and torque of 253 lb ft at 4800 rpm. 5-speed automatic is the only transmission available to the model. With the V6 engine, the SUV model can achieve fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city premises and 22 mpg on the highway roads.
The current generation Pilot comes equipped with advanced comfort and convenience features like, front air conditioning, front bucket seats, keyless entry, cloth seats, driver and passenger illuminated vanity mirror, front and rear reading lamps, rear seat pass through and power locks.
